Spooky Season Introspection

Today is Halloween.

Today is the culmination of an infinite number of ways to experience being human. Historical and modern. Spiritual and secular. As a modern holiday, Halloween is devoted to character choices that we may not make intentionally. Halloween mirrors and amplifies the parts of daily living that we take for granted. Trick or treat, we decide to be mean or kind. Embrace a part of ourselves we’d like to know better in costume or cloak ourselves in disguise for the sheer joy of the experience.

Today is marked by the concepts of liminality and transition. We celebrate endings and beginnings all at once. Liminality is found in the transition out of harvest season and is also attached to the idea that the veil between the living and dead is at its thinnest tonight. Whether it is a time constricted social construct or a period in your life, liminal phases such as today give us the opportunity to embody all we are and embrace new changes we would like to make. This evening, Samhain begins, and we recognize the end of harvest season. In modern times, it is still important to recognize the turning of the wheel. A change in the seasons means more than the weather and availability of crops.
